In other Morgan news, we've been gradually weaning her off the binky, hoping to have her cured before the baby comes and taunts her constantly with his. She's been down to just a binky in the car and the bed for many months, so it hasn't been as painful as it could have been. It wasn't hard at all to remove the car binky, because she's so fascinated with the world she's driving by. Her favorite is to tell us the color of all the stop lights, and whether to stop or go. Then we tried a cold turkey bedtime with no binky, and it was awful. I felt like I was a new mother again, up every hour with a crying baby. I'm pregnant, I'm already sleep deprived, and I caved. I just wasn't fully committed yet. She got her binky back so we could get some sleep, and the next day we started Operation Binky. First we discovered a whole series of Elmo clips on YouTube encouraging kids to get rid of their binkies. She watched the following clip over and over.
Then we gathered all remaining binkies together, told her repeatedly that these were the only ones left, and then started bribing her into throwing them away. One time I let her use scissors to dissect the binky (thanks for the idea, Josilyn!), and the rest I gave her Halloween candy for. Her own Halloween candy. Hehe. I loved that idea. She chucked the last one yesterday morning, voluntarily, asking for candy... and then we experienced naptime. A solid hour of wailing, moaning, and screaming. Last night she went right to bed, exhausted from a napless day. Around 2 or 3 AM, she started crying, refused to be comforted, and we enacted tough love. Tough for both Morgan and us, since no one got any sleep until she finally wore herself out 2 hours later. Then we got up early to take Erik to the airport (maybe we could have planned the timing better...) She finally did nap briefly today, after another long period of crying, and then she woke up really mad at me. We'll see how tonight goes, but as my friend says, it always gets worse before it gets better. Like it or not, Morgan, your binky days are over.

Trust me we feel your pain!
You have the best stories with that girl. I'm so glad you write them down... and share them with the rest of the world.
I once had my phone go off during the quiet pathos part of a play and as I scrambled to turn it off it played, "If I Only Had a Brain" from the Wizard of Oz. Completely mortifying, but a fitting tune nonetheless.
Thanks for sharing...now I don't feel so bad when my kid starts screaming "Out!" "Down!" and "Walk!" in the middle of sacrament. Maybe we should come visit the ward and Dean and Morgan can have a yell off. Good luck with the binky weaning. I wanted Dean to be totally done before Baby 2 comes...he only gets it for night time now, so I semi-succeeded. One final comment: Sesame Street is genius. Dean's been watching the "Bye Bye Binky" song too and now requests it whenever I am on the computer.
This is a very humorous post, Lauren. I can't wait to see what she does in our ward next week!
What do you think, everyone, should Lauren syndicate her posts?
About the binky thing. A Child NEEDS to be able to self sooth...and they self sooth themselves with sucking. A pacifier is WAY better than sucking a thumb, and way better than using food or candy for that soothing. These latter 2 alternatives lead to buck teeth, and to obesity.
Please don't feel so pressured to take away a child's soothing tool...the pacifier. Especially because you're having another baby soon! She might need to fall back on some old self comfort during that stressful time.
I don't know how old this child is...but if she is not 4 years old....I would not be forcing a child to go without. I have read a lot of research...I have raised 5 of my own kids, and ran a daycare for over 30 years, and I have never seen a kid continue to use a pacifier when older. :o) They grow physically too big for them eventually ...and they stop feeling comfortable in their mouths...and they will stop. Just my opinion...(the opinion of a person who sucked her thumb until she was 9 years old (had a rough childhood) and has the buck teeth to prove it!)
