The Big Two

Our baby is now two, and helping me understand just where the term "terrible twos" comes from. Compared to some other behavior I've heard of, I suppose she's really pretty mild, but compared to her own previous behavior, Erik and I are in a little bit of shock. She'll be cute and funny and smart, and we'll think to ourselves, "gee, we must be excellent parents," and then a second later she's in full blown tantrum mode because my arm is touching her, or because I don't want to read Cinderella for the 10th time, or maybe because we took away her food when she said she was done. Those sort of tragedies. It makes me refreshingly excited to have a baby again, one who can't run away from me, or tell me "no Mama" when I start singing, and whose only problems in life can be solved with food, sleep, and clean diapers. Feel free to remind me of this post when I start complaining of sleep deprivation and never-ending loads of laundry. Anyway, our little charmer turned two last week, and had a little celebration. Out there in the cutesy mommy world, many ladies throw darling theme parties with lots of little kids and homemade decorations and professionally iced cupcakes. Before I started to panic at such an idea, I firmly told myself that Morgan is best friends with adults, not children, she could care less about having a cute party, and as long as she gets dessert she doesn't care what it looks like. She's not going to remember it anyway. So we hung a few streamers, decorated with pictures of her over the last two years, and had cupcakes and ice cream. I did pressure myself into making homemade Elmo cupcakes, which didn't taste very good, and only looked slightly better. I give up. Next year she gets box mix cupcakes and a tub of frosting.

She didn't seem to hold it against me

She got the all-important first baby doll, hopefully to prepare her for a real baby. So far she gives it hugs, disciplines it, and throws it on the floor when done.

Morgan watches this video over and over. An early narcissist.

And just because I think she's cute and looking suddenly so very grown up:

Happy birthday Momo. May all your birthdays end like this one, with presents unopened that we can save for Christmas.

Two! It goes by so fast and she is getting so big and cute!

Addie loves her birthday video too. We've watched it a million times at this point. I think it's because they already believe that everything in the world revolves around them, and birthdays prove that theory!

I'm in the same camp as you that they're NOT going to remember any of their early birthday parties, no matter HOW spectacular they are.... I think it's more a creative outlet for the mother than anything... Asher still didn't get what was going on when he turned two and I ended up opening all his presents for him while he took all of the spoons out of the kitchen drawer.

Good job on making Elmo cupcakes! I already plan on buying a Funfetti cake mix like I did last year. I had to laugh when you mentioned she tells you "No" when you try and sing...I am glad it's not just my kid that does that. Happy late birthday to Morgan and it was nice to see you guys the other night!
