The other day, we got a coupon in the mail promising us a $10 gift card to Babies R Us if we went to the store and registered with them. I thought to myself, "Free diapers!" and convinced Erik to go with me. All we have to do, I think, is get a little scanner, scan a few random items, and claim our prize. When we show up the rain has driven a multitude of pregnant women inside, all waiting in line for their scanners. That should have scared me off (it did Erik) but I held firm, because I love gift cards. We finally got signed up and then set off for the infant section. I was instantly overwhelmed by whole walls full of bottle varieties, nursing accessories, and the all-important pacifier. Erik started looking around and said "I'm not spending money ever again." Not knowing what (if anything) she would need, we just skipped that section and went to car seats and strollers. There I realized how ill-prepared I am to be a mother. Words like rear-facing or front-facing, 3-in-1, stroller system, and umbrella stroller left me confused and uncertain of myself. I don't know whether a 3-in-1 carseat is better than a stroller system. I don't know if I'll ever use a bouncer or a swing. I started wandering more and more slowly through the store, staring at items I couldn't even name. Finally Erik had had enough, and steered me back to the registry booth. She took my scanner with a smile that faded as she realized we had only scanned six items. I wanted to tell her that normally I'm a very decisive person - our wedding registry was comprehensive and left Erik in a state of shock. All I could do, though, was numbly take the gift card and walk out of the store. I think I'm going to need a lot of advice from all of you baby-toting mama's! Please let me know what's a waste of time and money and what you couldn't live without. And any other advice on how to take care of a child that up til now I felt prepared for would be welcome.

This picture is of my mom and sister and I at my cousin Randee's wedding. I know it's not as impressive as a side shot, but you can kind of see the belly poking through!

I am sending you an email as this method will not be sufficient for answering your questions and don't worry! I remember feeling the same way. For some reason my husband seemed to know what he was doing though, which is somewhat odd...but helpful!
I have been to Babies R Us for baby shower gifts many times and I still get overwhelmed when I enter the store. How many different types of burp cloths do you need?!?! Honestly...
But good luck!!
Lauren, you look super cute! Wow, sorry, no advice from me about Babies R Us, but take some notes and maybe one day, some day you can inform me!
Borrow as much from friends and relations as you can. Don't buy a breastpump until the baby comes and you know if you really need one. Diaper bags are great, but the hospital will give you a free one... sometimes two. The hospital also lets you steal a bunch of diapers, wipes, and pacifiers from the wheeling baby cart. Pray that someone at your baby shower dumps a whole bunch of burp cloths on your lap- you'll need a lot of those.
ALSO, check out the classifieds and garage sales- there's alot of perfectly good stuff practically being given away if you keep your eyes open.
Email me- I can help you in this department. sarahemeline@hotmail.com
Hello we've never met...My husband served a mission with yours....I'm Christy:) Justin was reading your blog and asked that I respond since we now have two kidos! A swing is a must. It helps put the baby to sleep. The bouncer is great when the baby is awake and you can move it easily into any of the rooms (especially the bathroom so you can keep an eye on the baby and still take a shower!) You need an infant car seat that faces the back and later you will need a toddler car seat (front facing), your pediatrician will tell you when (around a year old) (I wouldn't do the 3 in 1 thing). You need a good stroller and/or a jogging stroller if you like to work out. Pick an expensive item to be your group gift at the babyshower (like a peg-perego stroller...it's the best!) Good luck with the baby! If you plan on having more than one, it's sometimes a comfort to know that these things will be used by more than one kid! Take care, alfreyslice.blogspot.com
PS. Buy everything neutral colors (brown, grey, green, yellow) so that you don't have to buy new stuff when you have a boy.
Lauren, I know how amazing you are and I know you'll have everything ready to go when that baby comes! You're great, don't forget it. That baby's lucky to be coming to such a wonderful home. You look adorable, by the way! Oh, and I had no clue Randee was getting married. Tell her congrats for me, or if you have her email, I'd love to say hello. Good luck with everything and thanks for keeping us in the loop. We love and miss you guys!
Been there and done that...and I wish there had been a Craigslist when your mother and I were making these decisions.
For example, someone in Murray is selling an Eddie Bauer Bouncenette. Check out the Graco Snugride carseat in South Jordan. Consider new baby bottles and binkys in the same town. And my favorite, an over the shoulder baby holder for sale in Taylorsville.

"recycling" is the way to go because they grow out of everything before it gets worn out. (the opposite is also true - I was way into "new" things but it took 2.5 seconds to break it in so I shoulda saved a buck and gotten that way to start out with)
plus that way you can get EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! and decide what works best for you and re-sale what doesn't work as well - every baby is different too. I never-ever use burp cloths or needed a breast pump (for #2, but did for #1) - but for sure a swing!!!!
No matter how much advice you get its still guess and check until you find your groove.
congrats you are a natural - your gonna love being a mommy!
