It's Resolution Time...

I realized that I personally have not posted since the middle of November. Erik has taken to blogging with a passion, which saves me time, but then he steals all my pictures and ideas if ever I do want to post. Sigh. The trials of married life. I decided that I wanted to get some input from all of you devoted readers on the subject of exercise. I hate it. I hate to do it, but I want the benefits that come with it. Like being able to climb a mountain without calling the paramedics halfway up. Or being able to wear a bathing suit fearlessly. Or even just fitting into pants that match the length of my legs. I'm hopelessly out of shape, and Christmas/New Years did some unkind things to me. Here's the deal, though; I'm uncoordinated, unathletic, fiercely competitive, and lazy (that may sound contradictory to you, but it's true). And I hate exercising in public. All of these things add up to no exercise. So how do I get over this and get in shape? Keep in mind that I'd be starting from pretty much rock bottom. I'm on a medical school budget and need ways to motivate myself, because to be honest, my resolutions to work out usually last one day. The satisfaction from one workout can last me for a year... Any (kind and loving) ideas out there?

You should try aerobics! Organized retardation worked for me! Actually, I heard aerobics are a cheap way to start. The other thing that I think would help a competitive person like yourself would be to join a sports team. The social obligation would keep you attending and the competitive element would give you some great exercise.

My best advice is to find a friend who will exercise with you. It's the best motivation to have someone waiting for you to meet them at the corner.

My advice is to start "training" for a 5K. I decided I was going to run one, and then I did (run/walk one), and then the next time I signed up for one I had a time to try and beat, and I did (just by a little), and now I'm trying to get in slightly better shape to beat my time again next time. It's nice to have a goal of something to work toward. Aaaand, if I can embrace running, anyone can. I love it.

When you can't get to a treadmill, may I suggest water aerobics? That is, if you have the resources available. Even if you are uncoordinated, whatever you're doing without coordination is hidden by water, so it's great!

I like the above mentioned 5K goal. I'm gonna try for the one in Salt Lake in April (my post-baby goal)- I'll sign up with you and do it if you want. You feel so super awesome afterwards... plus they give you free stuff at the finish line... edible stuff.
Another good one I tried before I couldn't fit in my swimsuit anymore was swimming. They've got swimming lanes up at the UoU... maybe you can find some kind of a med school deal to get in cheap on.
I also picked up a killer ab workout on my mission that takes like, no longer than 10 minutes per morning to do, and I SWEAR by it. I had the beginnings of a very nice 6-pack before I went prego, and I attribute it all to this way simple workout sheet of mine- I can get you a copy if you're interested...

Well, I don't think you are alone on this one. Especially in the winter, it gets really hard to exercise. You can get a spouse pass at the UofU gym for like 20$ a semester. I don't have access to a gym right now so I do dance workouts online (youtube) and these DEFINITELY have to be done alone because I look so ridiculous...

One word: pilates. You can do it in your living room and it'll kick your butt.
